poffertjes

There are many reasons why Amsterdam should be your next destination, but here we will talk about one. Food! The truth is that we didn’t know many things about the Dutch cuisine before our visit to Amsterdam. Dutch have some very interesting delights, salty and sweet that can only make you ask for more. So in this post you can find a list of local delights that we tasted and we strongly recommend.

Poffertjes

In one sentence, little pancakes of heaven (photo above). Ideal size for your mouth, fluffy with a piece of butter and powdered sugar. The best dessert we ate in Amsterdam. Eat them warm and just enjoy.

Bitterballen

Deep friend little balls, crispy outside, soft and warm inside. You need more?! Main ingredient is beef but you can find other versions too. Usually served with a dash of mustard. Perfect snack to accompany your cold beer.

Gouda cheese

If you don’t know that Gouda cheese is from Netherlands you will realize it on your arrival. Cute little shops for tasting and buying varieties of Gouda cheese can be found all over the city. There is also a museum! We tried with chilly, herbs, truffles and many more interesting flavors.

Herring the Dutch way

I personally loved herring. I liked the texture, the taste and even the sea smell! Accompanied with pickles and chopped raw onions is just the perfect salty snack. The truth is that for many people is not that attractive food, but the only way to find out is to try! Good news you can also find it on a sandwich version.

Patatje oorlog or just fries with sauce

You can find many shops in Amsterdam that serve fries with sauces as a snack. Very popular choice is fries with mayonnaise, but if you want to taste something different and more traditional go for the patatje oorlog. These are basically fries with peanut sauce, mayonnaise and raw chopped onions.

Stroopwafel

Imagine two pieces of dough in a heated waffle iron and between them a layer of caramel. Do we need to say more? Not too sweet, so perfect with coffee!
